Foundation Model

A large AI model trained on broad data that can be adapted to a wide range of downstream tasks. GPT-4, Claude, and Llama are foundation models. They're called "foundation" because they serve as the base for fine-tuning, prompting, and application-specific deployments. The EU AI Act regulates these under its GPAI provisions, with additional obligations for models posing systemic risk.
